CAL XURRIU
Alt Penedès, Catalonia, Spain
Perched in the hills of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, just outside Barcelona, Cal Xurriu is the heartfelt project of Paula Sandoval , also chef patron at Jazminos in Bilbao, and her husband Agustí Costa, launched in 2018.
Rooted in a family legacy of grape-growing, the duo chose a different path: turning away from large-scale production to focus on small, forgotten plots; biodiverse treasures scattered across the wild terrain of Alt Penedès.
They use 'observational viticulture'. This term express the hours they dedicate to observation to minimise their interventions. They believe the bestapproach is “no action,” both in the vineyard and in the winery. It’s a constant exercise of trust with the plants and the grapes.
In these hidden corners, the vines grow untamed, herbs and animals live freely, and the work of the vineyard flows with nature’s rhythm. With deep respect for the land, Paula crafts soulful, expressive wines, delicate yet vibrant, infused with the spirit of ancient vines and the quiet beauty of the hills they call home.
