Grape varieties: Sumoll
Location: Alt Penedès Catalonia, Spain
Viticulture: Natural, No sulfites
Tasting notes: Very serious wine made from nearly 80-year-old vines. This wine is made from the rare and distinctive Sumoll grape. Grown in clay-limestone soils scattered with river pebbles, it offers a delicate yet profound expression. Crafted with minimal intervention, the process begins with carbonic maceration, followed by partial foot stomping and gentle pressing. After malolactic fermentation, the wine rests quietly before bottling. The result is vibrant, fruity, juicy yet structured with fine tannins. An earthy wine that speaks of time, place, and quiet transformation.
About the producer: Cal Xurriu, founded in 2018 by Paula Sandoval (chef patron at Jazminos in Bilbao) and Agustí Costa, is nestled in the hills of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, near Barcelona. They focus on small, wild parcels in Alt Penedès. With deep respect for nature, vines grow freely among herbs and wildlife. Paula crafts delicate, soulful wines that reflect the land’s quiet beauty and the whisper of wind through century-old vines.
